Each year some four million visitors find their way to the wide variety of top attractions in Rotterdam. The city offers opportunities for everyone: people who love the hectic bustle of the city, who want to rise high into the air, who want to stare fascinated into the eyes of live sharks, but also for people who are searching for the peace and beauty of nature.
One of the most popular daytime attractions in the Netherlands is Diergaarde Blijdorp.
Walk through different parts of the world, seeing interesting animals that feel right at home in an approximation of their natural habitats.
In the impressive Oceanium you will feast your eyes on your journey through this enchanting world of water, filled with ocean and coastal dwellers, including exotic fish, puffins, playful sea otters, snakes, sharks and jellyfish. One of the highlights is the cold domain of the imposing Emperor Penguins: the Falkland Islands! In this area, you can walk across moving ice floes while the penguins swim by below your feet!
A visit to Rotterdam would not be complete without a tour of the harbour on the Spido. Explore Rotterdam in only 75 minutes, seeing everything that lives on and around the water. It is an incredible experience to see the wharves, quays and docks from so close and to take part in the busy traffic of ocean ships and canal boats, on a river that brought Rotterdam its glory. Or explore the area around Rotterdam during a fascinating all-day trip over the many rivers and streams that run through the region. Follow the expansion of the port area right up to the sea, and see ships of increasing dimensions. A world-class experience that doesn’t take long at all.
The Euromast in Rotterdam, the highest lookout tower in the Netherlands.
The new high-speed automatic elevators take you up to the platforms, which are an experience all on their own. Then take the Space Cabin to experience the sensation of a rocket launch, slowly spinning in orbit up to a height of 185 meters. The cabin returns to the platform by means of retro thrusters.
Real daredevils can even abseil down the tower on ropes, wind conditions permitting.
On the banks of the Maas River lies Tropicana, one of Europe's largest tropical leisure pools, with palm trees, banana trees and a constant temperature of 30C, offering tropical surprises for young and old alike.
Discover this exotic adventure for yourself! At the heart of the Tropicana lies the large Wave Pool. From the lagoons, you can swim through to the outdoor pool. If the Tarzan cry echoes through the room, the waves start rolling in at high speed and you bob around in wild seas. For our smallest guests, we have a safe, shallow pool with fun attractions and play animals. A wild river many meters long flows through the Tropicana jungle. Let yourself be carried away and experience this unique, foaming adventure.
Fun for the whole family can be had at the Plaswijckpark with its extensive playground, road safety training park and zoo.
Plaswijckpark is a peaceful green area amidst the crowded, bustling city streets of Rotterdam. Children can wander around the park safely. Surrounded by animals, miniature golf, a playground, a rosarium and a road safety training park, they learn while they play. Parents and grandparents of all ages enjoy the gardens and the peace and quiet. The playground, zoo and park are ideally suited for school trips and other outings.
For an oasis of peace in the middle of the hectic city, visit the lovely gardens of Arboretum Trompenburg.
Arboretum Trompenburg is a very lovely park filled with well-designed walking paths, dating back to 1820. The six-hectare park houses a rich collection of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. There are trees and shrubs from all over the world, as well as the national reference collection of the oak, beech, holly and rhododendron. Thousands of perennials, including the national collection of Hosta (750 different species), water plants, spring and summer bulbs and succulents.
Rotterdam as its own best attraction
Various tours depart daily on bicycle or boat, with or without a tour guide, to explore the mysteries of the city of Rotterdam. For example, City Safari organises explorations through Rotterdam, through doors that normally remain closed. Residents and entrepreneurs will welcome you into their homes or places of worship, stores or workshops, cafés or restaurants.
